7 Tips To Prepare Your Petits For Back To School
As summer comes to a close and the pandemic isn’t going away anytime soon, heading back to school can bring up lots of emotions for the little ones. Have you started preparing your little ones for the new year? From choosing stationery to resetting a back to school ritual, our guide is here to help you make this year the best one yet.
1. Establish A Good Sleep Routine
It’s most likely your petit’s sleeping schedule is all over the place during the summer holiday. Ease into back to school mode by establishing a good sleep routine for your toddler. If your target bedtime is 9pm, start adjusting your evening routine by 15 minute each night until you meet your target bedtime. Small adjustments are easier for your petit to get used to rather than a drastic change suddenly. You can also use a timer like Time Timer to let your petits know that they have 1 hour to go before it’s time to hit the sack.

2. Refresh Your Little’s Wardrobe
Time to Marie Kondo your petit’s wardrobe and give it a refresh! Take out clothes that no longer fit your toddler and donate them to a local charity.
3. Prepare A List Of Back-To-School Essentials And Stock Up
Instead of doing a last minute checkup on your school supplies, prepare at least 1-2 weeks in advance so you don’t have to stress out the day before the new semester starts.
4. Set Up A Dedicated Study Space
Make sure there’s a distraction-free work zone for your petits so they can get their homework done in peace. Declutter and reorganise the desk and bookshelves are keys here, so they can go through their work without looking for their stationery and worksheets all over the place. If your petits have trouble sitting still, use Time Timer to help them “see” time for an easier, smoother homework routine.

5. Get Your Lunch Boxes + Water Bottle Ready
If you make homemade lunch for your petits to take back to school, consider getting reusable lunch boxes and sandwich bags instead of ziploc bags. You’ll leave less carbon footprints while keeping your toddler’s lunch box look stylish. Yumbox is a great one for portioning a healthy meal. Having a BPA-free water bottle also helps save up money from buying bottled water on the go.

6. Practise School Lunch Ahead Of Time
First day of school can be daunting for the little ones who are transitioning from preschool to kindergarten. Practise “school lunch” with them before their first day, so they can get used to everything from using their new lunch box to eating under a fixed time frame. Make sure they know how to open everything in their lunch bag, eat neatly and clean up after, so they can be more confident when eating in the classroom.
7. Check In With Your Petits About How They Feel
“How do you feel about going back to school? Are you excited or nervous?” – These are some of the questions you can ask your toddlers to check in how they feel about going back to school. Let them know you’re always here to listen and address their concerns and feelings with compassion.
