Baby Crib Buying Guide: 4 Must-Haves to Look for When Choosing a Crib

Your little one is on the way – or they’ve already made their grand entrance! Either way, they need a place to sleep. How do you find the best baby crib?

You might already feel overwhelmed. There are thousands of types to choose from and too much information. As a new parent or parent to be, you don’t have the time to dig through it all. We’ve got you covered.

This quick guide will give you a crash course in how to choose and buy the perfect crib

Here are 4 things to look for.

At Petit Bazaar, we feature high-quality and trustworthy cribs from Europe. Click here to view our crib collection.

1. Safety

Oeuf baby cribs feature 3 adjustable mattress positions, and their finishes are non-toxic and water-based.

You want your baby to be safe. There’s no question about that. How can you tell if a crib is safe? Easy.

  • First, there should be adjustable mattress heights. As your baby gets stronger – and a little more adventurous – you can lower the mattress height.
  • Next, check the measurements. Make sure the crib provides a snug fit for the mattress and that slats are not more than 6cm (2 ⅜ inches) apart. This helps avoid any arms or legs stuck in places they shouldn’t be.
  • Last but not least, make sure the company tests for material toxins. Paint should have less than 0.009% lead and minimal VOC (volatile organic compounds). Regulations vary, but the company should have a Children’s Product Certificate available.

A safe crib means peaceful sleep for both you and baby!

2. Versatility (Convertibility)

Oliver Furniture Wood Mini+ Cot System is suitable for 0Y to 9Y, which allows you to convert a crib into toddler bed and day bed, without extra conversion kit. It can even be turned into a loft bed or bunk bed (conversion kits sold separately).

Check for versatility!

Little ones change and grow every day. A baby bed that evolves with them is essential. Look for a crib that can transform from an infant and toddler crib to a child-sized bed. Instead of buying multiple beds over the years, you save major cash by investing in one convertible crib.

One standard crib is great for your wallet and it’s better for the planet. Convertible cribs can stay with your family for generations. Pass them down to younger siblings. Just convert it back to crib status. Versatility gives you affordability and sustainability.

3. Quality

Oliver Furniture baby cribs are produced in solid birch wood. Their materials pass strict FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) demands for certification. They are made in Europe and designed to meet the strict EU norms for safety and health.

Look for quality material.

Ask yourself:

  • Is this strong, sturdy material that is built to last?
  • Where does the company source its wood or metal? Is it a high-quality source?
  • If sustainability and fair trade are important to you, how do they make cribs and how do they pay employees?

Cribs should also be easy to set up and convert (if you choose a convertible crib!). A complicated setup can be a headache and a safety hazard. Quality material and an easy setup is the magic combo!

4. Style

French-brand Laurette offer baby furniture in 10 beautiful pastel colors. Choose the one that creates harmony in your nursery.

Check for style!

There are thousands of crib styles out there. Some are more whimsical while others are simple. Some use wood, metal, or a combination. Figure out what style speaks to you and your family!

Pro tip: less is more. Simple, chic style cribs can fit into every home. Simple styles are often gender-neutral too, so they can be used for siblings. The look of your little one’s room will change as they grow. A simple crib can easily adapt to its surroundings.
