10 Rainy Day Activities For Your Kids (So Everyone Can Stay Sane!)

It’s that time of the year again! It’s been raining dogs and cats this summer in Hong Kong, so naturally we mamans are staying put at home with our little ones. If you find yourself stuck at home all day, here are some ideas to keep them occupied (so you can stay sane) with these fun and engaging activities.

1. Have A Cooking Party

Have a pretend cooking party with your little one’s cooking toys or host a real one by asking them to help you out in the kitchen. You can make some simple treats such as jello or cookies, and they can decorate their treats!

2. Dance It Out

Find a spotify playlist filled with songs that your little ones enjoy and dance it out! Let’s see who has the best dance moves.

3. Go On An Indoor Camping Trip

While rainy days make it difficult for outdoor activities, why not bring nature into your home? Build a fort with some pillows and blankets, or set up a teepee for your little ones to have some cozy playtime. You can also take your plants and put them around the fort. If you want to wow your little ones, dig out your Christmas light and put it inside the tent for special effects!

4. Cozy Up For Storytelling Time

Rainy days are perfect to snuggle up at your reading corner. Take turns telling your little one’s favourite stories, or have each of your petit to be one or two of the characters in the book. You can even turn it into a mini play with homemade props. Our current favourites are the series from Little People, Big Dreams!

5. Playtime In The Bath

Make your little one’s bathtime extra fun by including bath-friendly toys in your daily routine. Quut 3D bath puzzles are perfect for imaginative play and help improve your petit’s fine motor skills.

6. Go On A Homey Picnic

Get your blankets and cushions ready for an indoor picnic at home. Your little ones can invite their stuffed animals (they can even hand draw their invitations). Ask them to help you prepare the food and drinks for some quality picnic time.

7. Design Your Own Learning Activity

Blend learning and play together by designing your own activity. Create your own color or shape recognition game, or mix and match different toys together for an imaginative play session with toys you already have a thome. They’re the perfect way to spark your little one’s imagination and expand their STEM skills. We recommend using block toys such as Magna-Tiles for these activities since they’re multi-functional and very versatile.

8. Make A Sensory Bin

Sensory bin is a great way for your little ones to learn and engage through a hands-on tactile experience. Use a plastic container and fill it with craft sand, water, rice or paper strands, and add in toys, rocks and other objects.

9. Do A Scavenger Hunt

Get your little ones racing around hunting for different items in the house! You can write down clues on a piece of paper for your older ones, or draw pictures for your younger petits. Keep it simple by asking them to look for general items (e.g. something round, something blue or something soft) or specific items. Get your little ones’ competitive spirit up by setting a Time Timer (so they can visualise the time) and see who can find the highest numer of items in a set time!

10. Throw A Dress Up Party

Get creative and dig through your wardrobe for a dress up party. Use dad’s shirt as a doctor’s coat, or make your own superhero cape.
