Debunking 5 Myths of Rugs

You’ve been considering getting a rug for a while and you love how area rugs can really pull a room together. But cleaning them is such a hassle, and won’t it cost an arm and a leg just to get them cleaned professionally? There are just so many things you need to figure out before committing to a nice rug. We understand getting a rug is an investment and we’ve come up with a list of most common myths when it comes to rugs. We hope this would help you find the perfect rug that suits your style and budget!

Myth 1: Rugs get dirty and you can’t clean it unless you hire a professional

Did you know machine-washable rugs exist? Simply toss the rug in your washing machine on a gentle cycle, and you can either hang it out to dry or throw it in the dryer. It’s a lot more stress-free and you won’t have to worry about spilling incidents anymore!

Myth 2: You need a big apartment for rugs to look good

You don’t always need a big living space in order to make it work. Rugs can actually make smaller space extra cozy and brighten up the room too. It’s especially useful in studios that are open plan.

Myth 3: Rug pads (anti-slip mats) are unnecessary

That’s something we’d suggest you never, ever skip! Rug pads are not a formality but a great necessity when it comes to rugs. They help rugs stay in their place and prevent slipping accidents (you won’t want to trip and fall on a hard marble floor now would you?). The pads also provide protection for the rugs from having too much friction with your floor, since rugs placed at high traffic areas without rug pads can cause their knots to loosen and destroy the rug overtime. Having a rug pad helps extend your rug’s lifespan, so definitely don’t skimp on it!

Myth 4: Bleach is a good stain remover

Never, ever use bleach to remove stains! Not only does bleach remove the colors of the fabric, they can also dissolve your rug’s fibers if they’re made of wool. Repeat after me: NEVER, EVER, BLEACH YOUR RUG. To remove stains, go for a gentle soap and throw it into the wash.

Myth 5: Vaccuming your rug will destroy it

Contrary to popular belief, vaccuming actually helps maintain the appearance and lifespan of a rug. It’s the easiest way to keep it clean and look presentable. You can also throw it into the wash at home if you have a machine-washable rug every 2-3 months in order to get rid of dirt and stains. Make sure you vaccum delicately by going in a forward direction based on the pattern of your rug.
